Reaction Roles
💡 Self-service roles: With Reaction Roles, members pick their own roles, such as pings, interests, games or pronouns. One click is all it takes, and your team never has to hand out roles manually again.
Key Terms
Role message: The message with a title and description where members pick their roles.
Toggle mode: One click gives the role, another click takes it away. Members can have as many roles as they like at the same time.
Unique mode ⭐: Within a group, a member can only have one role. If they pick a new one, the old one is removed automatically. Perfect for colors, regions or teams.
Group: Bundles roles that exclude each other. A group can span multiple role messages.
Method 1: Setup via the Dashboard (Recommended)
Open the Nexus Dashboard and select your Discord server.
Go to Reaction Roles in the menu.
Create a new role message: choose a channel, title and description.
Add entries: one role, one emoji and the mode for each. For Unique mode, also choose a group or create a new one.
You can also remove individual entries or entire role messages there.
Method 2: Setup Directly in Discord
With the Manage Roles permission, a wizard walks you through the setup step by step:
Type
/reactionrole_createand choose the channel where the message should appear.Enter a title and description in the pop-up. With Premium, you can also choose between emoji reactions and a dropdown menu here.
Nexus posts the message. Then click Add role and follow the steps:
Step 1 – Role: Choose the role to hand out.
Step 2 – Emoji: Click Select Emoji and, within 60 seconds, react to the posted message with the emoji you want.
Step 3 – Mode: Choose Toggle or Unique ⭐.
Step 4 – Group (Unique only): Create a new group or pick an existing one.
Repeat this for every additional role and click Finish at the end.
Use /reactionrole_list to see all role messages and /reactionrole_delete to remove them.
Emoji Reactions or Dropdown Menu? ⭐
Emoji reactions (default): The classic. Members click an emoji below the message. Best for a small number of roles.
Dropdown menu (Premium): The message gets a "Select roles" button that opens a personal selection menu for each member. Much tidier when you have many roles.
Free vs. Premium
Free: Toggle mode with standard emojis and emoji reactions.
Premium: Adds Unique mode with groups, custom server emojis and the dropdown menu.
Common Pitfalls
"Role is above me": In your server settings, the bot's role must be placed above every role it should hand out.
"Role is above you": You can only set up roles that are below your own highest role.
Role is managed by an integration: Discord doesn't allow bot or booster roles to be assigned manually. Choose a different role.
Emoji isn't accepted: Emojis from other servers that Nexus isn't on won't work. Each emoji can only be used once per message.
